Mace Windu

Geonosian Rescue

"Calm and controlled, Mace Windu is a noble Jedi Master and member of the Jedi High Council. Mace observes the widening divergence in the Republic with great fear, and he worries that there aren't enough Jedi to protect the galaxy during these critical times. Adding to the strife, a former Jedi and friend has resurfaced as leader of the very Separatist movement that threatens the Republic. When the Jedi Council is alerted to the location of the Separatists' armies, Mace assembles a league of Jedi to infiltrate the Separatist stronghold and subdue their massing forces." --Excerpt from the card back

Sculpt--1/5
There are so many things wrong with this figure that I don't know where to start. I guess we should start with his most obvious point of disgust--his head. Hasbro has unwisely chosen to give Mace a raging, screaming headsculpt...and it's awful. Technically, it's sculpted well, but really, who wants a Mace Windu figure who is permanantly screaming? To make matters worse, his eyes are squinting, so he isn't even looking at whatever he is attacking. Also, he is never seen in the movie with such an expression.

Problem #2: he doesn't stand too well. Mace has a narrow stance, so it's a delicate balacing act getting this guy to stand on his own. The only way I could get him to stand is when his right arm was straightened; once it swings in front of him, he falls forward easily.

Last but not least, his left arm isn't posed well. It wouldn't be so bad if Hasbro had included some articulation in this arm, but of course, they didn't. Thus, you can't do much with his left arm. You can put his lightsaber in this arm, but then his right arm looks out of place.

Articulation--1/5
Mace has seven points of articulation: neck, shoulders, right hindged elbow, waist and hips. His hip articulation is worthless since no matter how you position his legs, he can't stand well. His shoulder articulation doesn't fare well either because of the inherent flaws in both arms. The hindged elbow articulation has no tightness whatsoever because of the action feature, and who needs neck articulation when you don't want to play with the figure.

Features--3/5
Mace Windu's main feature is his lightsaber-slashing action. When you press a huge button sticking out of his bum, he twists at the waist and his momemtum swings his right forearm forward, bringing the lightsaber along with it. The feature works pretty good overall, but it's too easy for the lightsaber to fly out his hand. The problem is that he's got no grip on the hilt at all and relies on the embedded magnet in his palm to hold the lightsaber. Ideally you should be able to chop off the head of Final Battle Jango Fett, but alas, I haven't been able to recreate such a scene.

Mace's other feature is his Force-attract palm with the aforementioned magnet. You can Force-attract his lightsaber, but it doesn't work too well. I've also got to mention the hole found in the sleeve of Mace's right arm. It looks like some sort of thing could have been inserted into the hole, like a Force effect or something. Obviously, Hasbro chose not to include such an accessory, and did not cover the hole. UPDATE: Thanks to an astute Usenet reader, I now know what the hole is for: you put the end of Mace's lightsaber hilt into it so his lightsaber won't fly out of his hand when you activate his slashing action! That alone makes the action feature a whole lot better. Now I can slash away and not worry about picking up his lightsaber off the ground.

Accessories--3/5
The best part of this figure is his lightsaber. It's just like the one that comes with the Deluxe Mace Windu, which is a good thing. The hilt is metal and nicely detailed, with molded hand grips and gold trim.

Paint--2/5
The paint on my figure isn't too good. Most of the buttons on the belt are grey in color, while another four buttons are the correctly colored silver. The grey buttons and belt buckle don't look good at all.

Overall--2/5
I don't know what Hasbro was thinking when they made this guy; his facial expression doesn't fit Mace's character, and his poseability is laughable. He doesn't even fit in with the pre-posed Jedi figures. This is definitely my least favorite Saga figure yet; he actually makes Peasant Disguise Anakin look like an awesome figure. Only buy this figure if you are a completist or you genuinely think you might like the action feature; other than that, I don't know why anyone would want this guy. If you must choose one Mace Windu figure, get the Deluxe version. UPDATE: Since finding out how to make the action feature work properly, I've upped his score to 2 (it used to be a 1). Why? Because his action feature is the only redeeming thing about this figure and truly is the only reason you should buy it (unless you're a completist).
