Saga Multipack: Imperial Forces Review

The first in what will hopefully be a long line of multipacks, the Imperial Forces set features repaints and kitbashes of older figures to give us "new" figures. Throw in some accessories and you've got a nice little set. Read on for the review and 16 photos!

Imperial Forces

"The powerful and ruthless Empire seeks to crush the Rebellion that is gathering strength in the galaxy. Imperial forces attack the heroic rebels with their military forces and through other, more subtle, means. They all contribute, in ways large and small, to the Empire's evil oppression of a galaxy that longs for freedom and lasting peace." --Excerpt from the package back

This set is a Toys R Us exclusive and retails for $19.99. You can also buy it from Amazon.com by clicking HERE

Sculpt: Darth Vader--4.5/5, AT-ST Driver--4/5, Stormtrooper--3.5/5, R4-I9--4/5
As you may know, the Darth Vader in this set is basically Emperor's Wrath Darth Vader, except cast in opaque black plastic. None of that distracting transparent plastic here! I still think this is an excellent sculpt of Vader, and the attention to detail on this figure still impresses me. And now that there's no transparency, the details in the sculpt are much easier to see.

The AT-St Driver is another repaint...well, more like a repainted kitbash (a kitbash is making a new figure out of parts from other figures). The body of the AT-ST Driver is the body of the Imperial Officer figure, and the jumpsuit that was less accurate for an Imperial Officer has become very accurate for the uniform of an AT-ST Driver. The head of the AT-ST Driver is from the Rebel Trooper and still looks pretty goofy to me. It's also molded in a very pale flesh tone so he looks like he's just seen a ghost. The helmet seems to be the same helmet first available from the Endor Victory Accessory Set except it is more of a greenish-gray in color. Overall, the figure turned out well and is a nice alternative to the old POTF2 version.

The Stormtrooper is also a kitbashed figure, made up of the Commtech Chip Stormtrooper's hips and legs, and the POTJ Sandtrooper's upper body. This makes for a whole "new" Stormtrooper. Hasbro chose to combine the two Stormtroopers because he needed to be able to hold the handles of the Imperial tripod cannon. The arms of the Sandtrooper are perfect for this. The drawbacks of using the upper body of the Sandtrooper is that it still has the rectangular hole in the back for the Sandtrooper's backpack. There are also some "straps" at the shoulder area that were meant to make the Sandtrooper backpack look like it's actually strapped to the Sandtrooper's back.

R4-I9 is a repaint of R4-M9, but I'm not complaining at all. I always enjoy another opportunity to get my hands on another astromech and R4-I9 was the first reason I wanted this set. I wasn't dissappointed...much. R4-I9's legs seems to be molded in a much softer plastic than I'm used to and they can bend very easily. The joints are also much looser than any other astromech figure I own and I think it's due to the softer plastic. I've also done a little bit of research on the droid and there might be a slight inaccuracy in the color of the toy. Looking at the photos found at www.astromech.net, it would appear to be that R4-I9 is actually dark navy blue in color, not black. I don't mind though, as R4-I9 looks very cool in black and he looks great with the other black Imperial droids.

Articulation: Darth Vader--3/5, AT-ST Driver--4.5/5, Stormtrooper--3.5/5, R4-I9--5/5
Darth Vader has eight points: neck, shoulders, right bicep-cut, right wrist-cut, waist, and hips. This was great in POTJ days, but it's pretty basic nowadays. It still works for me and some nice poses are still possible.

The AT-ST driver has, of course, the awesome articulation of the Imperial Officer figure, so there's not much more you could want from this figure in terms of articulation. Maybe some knee-joints would make it perfect, but as it is, it's awesome.

The Stormtrooper has ten points: neck, shoulders, bicep-cuts, waist, hips and knees. Pretty decent articulation, but the knee articulation is somewhat dated. Since the knees bend at an angle, you can't really make the Stormtrooper kneel. You can make it look like he's running I guess. The arm articulation is good for manning the tripod cannon.

R4-I9 has perfect articulation. Articulated ankles, and a retractable leg; what more can you ask for?

Features--3/5
The Imperial tripod cannon comes with two projectiles that can be fired. Basic and fun shooting action.

Accessories--4/5
You get a nice amount of accessories in this set, some good, some not so good. You get Vader's lightsaber, 2 Imperial blaster rifles, 2 heavy blaster rifles, a blaster rack, a mouse droid, an interrogation droid, an Imperial tripod cannon, and 4 stands. The inclusion of 4 stands is nice and is useful for figures who have trouble standing. The Imperial tripod cannon is the same one that came with the POTF2 deluxe Snowtrooper and the details of this thing still hold up well. The mouse droid is the same one that came with R4-M9, kinda big, kinda whatevers; I don't think I'm going to be using it. The interrogation droid is the big ugly one that came with the Death Star Accessory Set and I still hate it. The 2 blaster rifles and the 2 heavy blaster rifles are the old POTF2 versions that are out of scale. According to Rebelscum.com, this set has also been found with the newer, more accurately scaled versions of these weapons. The blaster rack is the one that came with the Commtech Stormtrooper and looks good. Vader's lightsaber is the same type that comes with Emperor's Wrath Darth Vader.

Paint: Darth Vader--2/5, AT-ST Driver--4/5, Stormtrooper--3.5/5, R4-I9--4.5/5
Darth Vader, what have they done to you? Vader is actually painted really well, except for one crucial thing--his helmet!! Instead of being nice and shiny, it's dull and lackluster. Everything else that is supposed to be shiny is shiny, so why couldn't they make the helmet shiny?! It doesn't make any sense. I've checked other Imperial Forces sets and they are all the same. Disappointing to say the least.

The AT-ST Driver is well painted with a nicely painted commlink and Imperial insignia on the left arm. The helmet could use some silver details, but the figure looks good overall.

The Stormtrooper looks good but again, Hasbro forgot to paint something. The two silver and black circles at the chin area of the helmet aren't painted at all. The dots found on the abdomen section of the armor are also painted incorrectly in silver instead of black.

R4-I9 has the most impressive paint job of all these figures. He's got a ton of silver accents and they are all painted well. He's also got some gray trim which gives him that extra bit of variation. I kinda wish Hasbro had made him glossy like R2-Q5, since R4-I9 looks quite dull next to him.

Packaging--2/5
The package is similar to Hasbro's final few Batman 4-packs; it's basically a large, square-sized clear plastic tray in a partial cardboard box. The top half of the plastic tray is exposed and the cardboard "box" only covers the back, part of the sides, and the bottom of the box. It's very minimalist and kind of cheap-feeling to say the least. I think it would have looked better if there were an actual box that covered all four edges of the tray, but as it is it seems to hold up well to shelf wear.

Overall--4/5
Despite some paint issues for some of the figures, I still recommend this set. I still think this is the best Darth Vader sculpt to date, and the AT-ST Driver will compliment your AT-ST vehicle well. The Stormtrooper will add a bit of variation to your troops, and R4-I9 is yet another great astromech figure. I think these multipacks were a great idea and an inventive way to give us "new" figures with a decent assortment of accessories.
