The box says this ship is from Return of the Jedi, but in reality an A-wing with this paint scheme never appeared in the movie. Thus, some people consider it EU (Expanded Universe). This A-wing is a Target exclusive and while I'm not sure when or if it will show up in the actual stores, you can order it online at Target.com for the nice price of $19.99 (this item is no longer available). There is a note at Target.com stating "Web Only", but whether they're talking about the item itself or the price remains to be seen. Read on for the review and 25 photos!
A-wing Fighter
"The A-wing fighter is the fastest starfighter in the Rebel Alliance's fleet. Used in the Battle of Endor, an A-wing helped to successfully turn the tide of the battle by attacking an Imperial Super Star Destroyer, which caused the enemy flagship to crash into the Death Star II." --Excerpt from the package back
| Sculpt--4/5 This is the same A-wing fighter as we've seen before. Sculpt-wise, nothing has changed at all. That's not a bad thing though, as it still looks great. It would be nice if they made a totally new sculpt, but the differences probably aren't great enough to warrant the cost. Features--4/5 Features are exactly the same as well with an opening cockpit, laser cannons that pivot 360 degrees, and retractable landing gear. My POTF2 A-wing's landing gear mechanism didn't work too well, and I had to resort to pulling out the landing gear manually instead of using the proper lever, so I am pleased to say that the landing gear on this new A-wing works flawlessly. The cockpit opens by pushing that little "bump" just behind the cockpit. Decent features that one would expect. Electronics would have made it perfect. Accessories--4.5/5 You get a rebel pilot figure complete with removable helmet! If he looks familiar to you, then you probably recognize him from the Rebel Pilots Cinema Scene. Yes, this is just a repainted version of Hasbro's Arvel Crynyd. Unfortunately, this isn't really a proper A-wing pilot's uniform (it's actually a Y-wing pilot's uniform circa Return of the Jedi), but that's okay since he still looks cool and he's even painted to match his ship! His articulation is basic: neck, shoulders, waist and hips. His helmet is molded in solid black plastic, so no transparent goggles this time. One negative thing about this figure is the plastic they used for his head. It is so pale a color that it was hard to photograph this guy! Paint--4.5/5 The paint job is one of the only things new about this A-wing. At first, I didn't want to buy this ship because of its EU-inspired paint scheme, but now that I actually have it in my hands I've gotta say that it's grown on me and I likes it! I also love how downright dingy this thing looks. It looks like it has been handled by a car mechanic! The pine green accents also make a nice change as do the insignia's near the cockpit and on the fins. There is a white line that follows the outline of the ship which is nice, but has fuzzy edges and doesn't look as defined as it should be. Packaging--3.5/5 The packaging is pretty much what we've come to expect; it's got the diorama-esque feel to it and large windows to view the ship from many angles. There are nice photos of the ship on the bottom and back of the box, but the graphic design is still in the original Saga style which has become somewhat boring to me now. The box isn't collector friendly; there's a lot of tape you have to cut and twisty ties to contend with. Plus, it's not a normal box where you open the side and slide the toy out. It's more like one long piece of cardboard that is wrapped around the toy with tabs that lock into the edges. Kinda hard to explain, but the good news is that you don't have to destroy the box; you can put it back together again if you so desire. The box also seems decently sturdy, but the large main window can be pushed in easily. Overall--4/5 This is a good vehicle set with a nice pilot and a new paint job. Those not into EU might not like it, but then again I didn't think I'd like it, but I do. If you like the A-wings then you should definitely buy this one. The price is also just right at $19.99.
