R1-G4

Tatooine Transaction

"An old-model astromech droid abandoned after the capture of its owner, R1-G4 was one of the droids that the Jawas scavenged to rebuild and sell to Tatooine colonists. Using cobbled-together weaponry, the Jawas probably incapacitated droid then dragged it to their immense treaded sandcrawler. R1-G4 was one of the droids rounded up when Imperial stormtroopers arrived on Tatooine looking for the escaped droids R2-D1 and C-3PO." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt--4.5/5
We've got R2 droids. We've got R3 droids. We've got R4 droids. We've even got a R5 Droid. So now we're getting the first ever R1 droid, and Hasbro did an excellent job on the sculpt! There's plenty of detail and R1-G4 looks like a pretty complex piece of machinery. My favorite part is where the three hoses come out. All the details look pretty accurate and R1-G4 looks pretty much just like the hunk of junk it was in the movie. The head seems like it could be a tad bigger and some minor details could be a bit more accurate but as a whole, I wouldn't change much.

Articulation--5/5
R1-G4 has four points of articulation: neck, arms, and lower body. I don't really know what type of articulation an R1 droid should have so what Hasbro has given us is more than enough for me. I figured the head would be able to turn but the big surprise for me was R1-G4's two extendable arms. The arms don't extend that much but the mere fact that they do is appreciated. The only complaint I have is that the head can be tough to move and I think it would have been nice if it had the clicky joint like other astromech heads.

Features--NA/5
There are no features associated with this set.

Accessories--0/5
R1-G4 comes with...nothing! When the figure was announced, it was rumored to include a Jawa figure, but when photos of the final product showed up, many were disappointed to find that the rumors weren't true. I can see why Hasbro would not include a Jawa, seeing as how R1-G4 is a pretty large droid, but it would have been nice if they included a Tatooine-themed base to display the figure on.

Paint--4/5
The paint job is pretty cool. A muddy-colored paint is splattered all over R1-G4 to help simulate the dusty environment of Tatooine. Also very impressive are the markings on his head which are pretty intricate and cleanly painted. The yellow lines found all over the figure are the only things that are a bit distracting because they tend to have fuzzy edges. I guess you can just say that it's supposed to be like that since this droid is supposed to look trashy.

Overall--4/5
This is a great rendition of R1-G4. This figure has all the detail and paint ops you could want in an R1 figure, and it will look great in dioramas or on your shelf. The lack of accessories is the only true disappointment, but the figure is awesome nonetheless. This is one of those unique droids I thought I would never see in plastic form. Major props to Hasbro for choosing to make this figure!
