Yoda as Santa

Star Wars Holiday Edition - 2nd Edition

"Hasbro and Lucasfilm Ltd. are delighted to present the second in a series of Star Wars Holiday Edition commemorative sets. Inspired by the artwork of renowned artist Ralph McQuarrie, this specially designed set captures the imaginative vision of McQuarrie's art in collectible 3 3/4" action figure scale. Our gift to you, this piece is a distinctive addition to any Star Wars collection. May the Force be with you, and happy holidays." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt:--4/5
It's Yoda! As Santa! Hasbro obviously used the Ralph McQuarrie art as a reference for this figure and they've stayed pretty true to his amazing art. Yoda's headsculpt is appropriately based on the original trilogy version and the likeness is pretty good--not perfect, but pretty good. Yoda's hands are the only thing that is extremely different from McQuarrie's art--the figure has three fingers total while in the art he has four fingers. The Santa outfit is pretty basic; there's nothing especially exciting about it other than the fact that it's on Yoda. But that fact alone is enough to make this a stand-out figure in your collection.

Articulation--3/5
Yoda has three points of articulation: neck and shoulders. Since this figure was primarily meant to be displayed and not played with, you can't really complain about the lack of articulation. It simply isn't necessary to have tons of articulation on this guy.

Features--NA/5
There are no features associated with this set.

Accessories--5/5
You get Yoda's cane, a sack full of toys, the display base, and a reproduction of the original Christmas card which this set is based on. Yoda's cane has the appropriate wood grain texture and is nicely gnarly. The sack of toys is pretty close to the McQuarrie art, with all the toys and presents visible and easy to identify. The display base pulls the whole set together and has a nice snow texture with the ball and block permanently attached. The words "Holiday Edition" adorn the front of the base and are painted gold, giving it an air of refinement. A slot at the back of the base allows you to insert the included Christmas card as a backdrop. The Christmas card features the original McQuarrie artwork on the front and inside it reads, "Happy Holidays and may the Force be with you this New Year." An envelope is also included if you wish to give the card to a fellow Star Wars fan for Christmas.

Paint--4/5
The paint ops are pretty good on this set. Yoda's skin has a nice wash on it to bring out the wrinkles in his face. The sack of toys also has a subtle wash and the presents within are very colorful and pretty accurate to the colors in the original artwork. The display base also has a nice wash to bring out the texture of the snow and the ball is cleanly painted with well defined lines and stars. The block is colored nicely and looks appropriately antique-ish. My only gripe is that the ball is orange when it should be yellow. There is also a bit of over-painting in some areas but it's not that bad.

Packaging--4/5
The package is pretty cool-looking. The domed bubble is reminiscent of a snow-globe, reinforcing the fact that this is a Christmas-themed set. The large bubble gives you a clear view of the figure and base from many angles making this set look as great in the package as it does out of it. The package seems reasonably durable but it seems like the very front of the package is prone to being crushed inward; one of my sets was slightly crushed in this area.

Overall--4/5
This is a nice set for any Star Wars fan looking to get into the Christmas spirit. Yoda fans will no doubt love having a figure of him dressed as Santa and if you love Ralph McQuarrie's artwork then I'm sure you'd love to have one of his pieces in action figure form. I like this set because it's a totally unique view of one my favorite Star Wars characters.
