Darth Maul
Theed Hangar Duel
"Darth Maul is a weapon forged by the hateful energies of the dark side to ensure the victory of the Sith over the Jedi order. A creature of pure evil, Maul has no personality beyond his ultimate devotion to his master, Darth Sidious." --Excerpt from the package back
| Sculpt--3/5 There's a good chance that you've probably never seen this Darth Maul figure before despite the fact that this is a re-release of an older figure. Yes, this is the Darth Maul figure from the Masters of the Dark Side 2-pack which came out some time during the Power of the Jedi line. Suffice to say, the 2-pack was hard to find and it seemed as if each store only had one shipment of them and once they were gone they were gone for good. I don't know for sure if that was what happened, but to a lot of collectors it sure seemed that way. So now Hasbro is re-releasing older figures and thankfully they decided to re-release this rare figure for those of us curious about what we were missing. The downside is, we weren't missing much...at least with the Darth Maul figure. The sculpting on this figure is average. There are textures and details but they aren't well defined. There isn't really much with this Darth Maul that we haven't seen before in other Darth Maul figures (sculpt-wise). The headsculpt is not bad but it looks a little more pudgier than it should. Articulation--3.5/5 Darth Maul has seven points of articulation: neck, ball-jointed shoulders, right bicep-cut, waist, and hips. Not bad, but not quite up to snuff with today's figures. The ball-jointed shoulders are arguably one of the best parts of this figure and allows for some variation in Maul's pose. You can't put him in a pose that's overly exciting so that's kind of a bummer. Features--NA/5 There are no features associated with this figure. Accessories--4/5 Darth Maul comes with his double-bladed lightsaber and an action figure stand. The lightsaber is another high point of the set as it has blades of an accurate length unlike most other Maul sabers which have short blades. The only other Maul to have an accurately sized lightsaber is the "soft goods" Darth Maul from the Episode I line. This is, in fact, the same lightsaber that came with that figure. You can also remove one of the blades. The stand is actually pretty nice. It has a Star Wars logo on it and can connect to other stands. These stands will be packaged with most of the re-releases. Paint--3.5/5 There's not much to paint on Darth Maul. His boots, belt, and gloves are appropriately glossy and his headsculpt is not painted too bad. His red face tattoo isn't totally accurate and I think there's a bit too much red, but the lines are pretty clean. Overall--3/5 This is a pretty average figure. The ball-jointed shoulders and accurately sized lightsaber blades are a plus, but ultimately this is a figure most people can do without. |
