Saga 2003 #17 Luke Skywalker (Throne Room Duel) Review

The climactic battle between Vader and Luke at the end of Return of the Jedi was a fitting end for the trilogy, and Hasbro tries to recreate a snapshot of Luke's rage during that battle. Read on for the review and 12 photos!

Luke Skywalker

Throne Room Duel

"Captured and taken to the second Death Star, Luke is manipulated by the Emperor into a lightsaber duel with his own father, Darth Vader. The two battle fiercely with their lightsabers, but then Luke chooses to yield the fight rather than destroy his father. Enraged the Emperor turns to eliminate the young Jedi, and with him the galaxy's last hope." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt--2/5
The throne room duel scene in Return of the Jedi is one of my favorite scenes in the entire Star Wars movie lineup, as I'm sure it is for many fans. Basing a figure on this scene is a no-brainer and we've already seen a decent Cinema Scene of this classic confrontation. So you'd think that with such an important scene, Hasbro would make a pretty good action figure--WRONG!! Rather than make a Luke that can be put in various poses to recreate the entire scene, Hasbro has chosen a less-favorable route and decided to base the figure on one singular moment in time: when Luke starts hacking away at Darth Vader. I actually like this pose, but I don't think a whole figure (of a primary character no less) should be devoted to it.

The sculpting isn't the best either. It's not bad, but it feels remarkably plain and somewhat dated. Actually the torso and legs are decent, it's the arms and the head that bother me the most. The arms just look terrible, not only because of the horrible looking elbow joints, but because the shoulders are huge and round. As for the headsculpt, well I'm a big fan of He-Man, but don't like it when he makes an appearance in my Star Wars figures. All kidding aside, the headsculpt of this Luke really does remind me of the vintage He-man figure. It's also just about the ugliest Luke headsculpt I have ever seen. I know what Hasbro was trying to accomplish here: the rage that Luke is feeling in this moment--the Dark side showing ever so much...but Hasbro overdid it. It looks nothing like Mark Hamill--not even an enraged Mark Hamill. Besides He-Man, it bears a striking resemblance to the Hulk. That can't be good.

Articulation--1/5
Luke has seven points of articulation: neck, shoulders, loose-hinged and swivel elbows, and hips. There's really not much point to most of the articulation on this figure unless you want to make some wacky poses. The arm articulation is made for the action feature and the hip articulation is practically worthless. This figure could have had only the arm articulation and it would have been good enough.

Features--2/5
Luke features "Lightsaber Battling Action!" but it's really not as exciting as it sounds. By pressing a huge button sticking out of his back, Luke's arms will swing forward and the loose-hinged elbows will complete the hacking motion. The feature works and works pretty well, but it gets old quickly. Luke also sports a magnet in his left palm, which can be used to attract his metal lightsaber hilt and is useful for just holding the lightsaber since his grip is too wide.

Accessories--4/5
Perhaps the best part about this figure are the accessories that he comes with. You get Luke's Jedi Knight lightsaber, in metal for the first time I believe, and it has a removable green blade. You also get part of the floor and railing of the throne room. The railing is in two pieces and can be "cut" by Luke's lightsaber. It falls apart pretty easily though. The detail on the floor is pretty good; there are huge scorch marks from lightsaber hits, and the cylinders at the ends of the base are nicely detailed. It's not totally accurate to the movie, but it's close enough. This base cannot connect to other bases however.

Paint--4/5
Decent paint job all around. The base has a nice wash to help bring out the detail, and Luke is painted well though there's not much to paint. However, there is a major variation on the paint job on Luke's hands: the first batch of Luke's had the wrong hand painted flesh. This has been corrected, and the corrected version is the one pictured here.

Overall--2/5
This is one of the worst Luke Skywalker figures ever made. It feels like the figure was made around the action feature instead of the action feature being made around the figure. Thus, the figure ends up feeling more like a Happy Meal toy than a true action figure. It actually looks like a Happy Meal toy too. The only reason anyone should get this figure is the mere fact that it is Luke Skywalker in his Jedi Knight outfit. My advise--even if you're an opener, keep this one in the package!
