Saga 2003 #12 Barriss Offee (Luminara Unduli's Padawan) Review

Jedi figures are proving quite popular, and Episode II has given fans plenty of source material for more. Barriss Offee, Luminara Unduli's padawan, is reviewed today in all her action-posed glory. Read on for the review and 9 photos!

Barriss Offee

Luminara Unduli's Padawan

"Barriss Offee is the Padawan learner of Luminara Unduli, and similarly shares her Master's latticed facial tattoos. The youthful Jedi apprentice often prefers wielding a lightsaber to participating in diplomatic negotiations. During the Battle of Geonosis, Barriss must defend herself and her fellow outnumbered Jedi from the Separatists' impending droid armies. Her strong healing abilities make her an invaluable asset when the battle erupts into a full-scale ground assault and the beginning of the Clone Wars." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt--3.5/5
The figure of Barriss Offee is much like the figure of her Jedi Master, Luminara Unduli--they are both pre-posed and dramatic. Barriss is actually more dramatic than Luminara, with her wildly flowing skirt and cloak. In terms of details, the sculpting is great with nice textures and plenty of folds. However, I think they overdid it in terms of artistic license. This figure seems more like a caricature than a realistic representation of the character. The proportions of her body are reminiscent of the first Saga Padme figure; she has a very skinny waist and clothes that are a little too form-fitting. Her flowing cloak is also a bit ridiculous. The way it is flapping and curving makes it more suitable for a Spawn comic book! Her skirt isn't as bad, but is very close to crossing that line toward comic book physics. I also have issue with her right hand. The hand is posed open to appear that she is using the force, but because of the way her arm is posed, it is hard to make her look natural. The right arm looks better when used to hold the lightsaber with both hands.

The headsculpt isn't that bad and is actually the best "screaming" headsculpt Hasbro has done in my opinion. It portrays the correct feeling of determination or a battle cry instead of looking like she ate one too many burritos.

Articulation--2.5/5
Barriss has five points of articulation: neck, ball-jointed shoulders, left wrist, and waist. If it weren't for the ball-jointed shoulders, the articulation would be practically worthless. Luckily, the ball-joints allow for some cool lightsaber poses, but I think this figure could have benefited from a bicep-cut or two. It would have been nice to be able to straighten out her right arm.

Features--3/5
Barriss has a magnet in her right hand. It's terribly obvious that it's there since it's not painted, but at least it didn't cause the palm to look bloated.

Accessories--5/5
You get Barriss' lightsaber, blast deflection effect, and base. You could also count her cloak since you can remove it. The lightsaber hilt is an all new design and has a green removable blade...too bad her lightsaber is supposed to be blue. The blast deflection effect is new too I think, and it does a decent job of looking like a blast deflection. It slides onto the lightsaber blade.

It's a good thing this figure comes with a base because she can't stand properly without it. The base portrays a rocky area with various Battle Droid parts scattered about. There are two pegs on the base for Barriss' feet. The base can also connect to other bases.

Paint--4/5
The paint job is well done. I'm particularly impressed with the paint job on her face with her well done tattoos and a pretty clean job on her eyes and mouth. Her cloak has a nice paint wash which adds a touch of color and brings out all the texture detail. The base has only one paint wash on it and it would've been nice if they had painted the Battle Droid parts to distinguish them better from the dirt.

Overall--3/5
I think this is the most extreme of the pre-posed Jedi figures because of her wild cape and crazy proportions, but she's still decently cool. It kind of sucks that you need a base or stand for her to stand up, but since they've included one it's not that bad an issue. I feel a bit indifferent about this figure because of its unrealistic nature, but others may love it.
