Saga 2003 #10 Lama Su (with Clone Youth) Review

I've finally found something new in my area! The pegs at my local Target have been empty for a couple of weeks now so I knew new figs would have to show up sooner or later. Unfortunately there were only about four basic figures by the time I got there and Lama Su was one of them. Read on for the review and 7 photos!

Lama Su

with Clone Youth

"A tall, lithesome creature, Lama Su is Prime Minister of the storm-shrouded planet Kamino. Commissioned by an enigmatic Jedi Master, Lama Su has undertaken the largest human cloning project ever attempted. He has grown an army of 200,000 troops - trained and ready for combat - with another million in progress. Because the Kaminoans are far removed from galactic affairs, Lama Su mistakenly believes he is fulfilling the order for the Galactic Republic, and is thus unaware of the grave consequences his enterprise will hold for not only the Republic but also for the entire galaxy." --Excerpt from the package back

I've finally found something new in my area! The pegs at my local Target have been empty for a couple of weeks now so I knew new figs would have to show up sooner or later. Unfortunately there were only about four basic figures by the time I got there and Lama Su was one of them.

Sculpt: Lama Su--4/5, Clone Youth--4/5
I can imagine that it's pretty hard to sculpt tons of detail on a 4" figure. So it must be even tougher when you're talking about a really skinny 4" figure. I think Hasbro did a pretty decent job with capturing Lama Su in plastic form. If you already own Taun We, you know that she was much shorter than she should be. Hasbro didn't make the same mistake with Lama Su, who has perfectly accurate height (the top of a Kaminoans' shoulders should be around the top of a human's head). Unfortunately that means Taun We looks extremely short when standing next to Lama su, but that's not Lama Su's fault. Lama Su's outfit is sculpted accurately, but I think his collar could be beefed up a little; as it is, it is much to skinny and thin. His sculpted skirt is well done and implies a walking motion. I don't quite like the way they've cut slits at the bottom front; it just looks too obvious and ruins the look of the skirt. That's really nit-picking though.
Lama Su's posing is not bad. I do have issue with his left hand though, which is posed palm upward. I guess it was for conversational gesturing, like when he's showing the clones to Obi-Wan for the first time. I can just hear him saying something like, "...and over here we have some clones in training", or something like that.

The clone youth is well done with a very neutral pose and well detailed outfit. The headsculpt has a good likeness to the actor and the helmet on his head is equally well done. The helmet doesn't have the wires and microphones sticking out of it, but at this scale it's hard to expect such details. My only beef with the sculpt is that maybe his head is a tad too small. Or maybe it's just that his face is too small. Well, whatever it is, something just looks off to me in terms of proportions.

Articulation: Lama Su--3.5/5, Clone Youth--2/5
Lama Su has three points of articulation: shoulders, and ball-jointed waist. Yeah, three points isn't much, but with such a skinny figure it's kind of unavoidable. The fact that he is wearing a molded skirt means that he can't really have hip articulation. Neck articulation is what I am missing most on this figure but it's easy to see how that would have been hard to do. The ball-jointed waist is what pushes this up to an above average score. It's a true ball and socket joint which means you can make him lean in any direction. It was a great idea to do this, especially since this figure wouldn't have been capable of many poses without it.

The clone youth suffers in this category. He has four points: neck, shoulders, and waist. There is no hip articulation and I think that really hurts this figure. It would have been nice if you could make this figure sit down. I guess it's not that big of a deal since this is just a clone youth. I mean, what am I going to do with this figure? Most likely he'll end up in the corner of my loose box, destined to be forgotten.

Features--NA/5
There are no features in this set.

Accessories--4/5
There are no accessories in this set...or is the clone youth the accessory? I guess he is...this is always a confusing category in cases like this. If the clone youth is indeed the accessory, then that's awesome. It's a lot better than just getting that clone chamber thingy that came with Taun We.

Paint--2.5/5
The painting is good, technically speaking. There's no splotches or sloppy painting, only a bit of bleeding here and there. The major problem I have is that they've painted certain parts the wrong color. On the Lama Su figure, there is dark blue trim on the skirt and his belt is also dark blue. Watching the film, it would appear that these are supposed to be a purple tone, a bit darker than the middle section of his skirt, but definitely not as dark as it is on the figure. I also take issue with his eyes; they make him look like he's spaced out and vacant. His eyes seem to be looking in two different directions, much like a goldfish.

The clone youth has an error on the helmet. The part of the helmet that covers his cheeks should be tan like the bottom back half of the helmet. Maybe they did this to distinguish his flesh from the helmet better. While not a color error, the hands of the clone youth are painted with glossy paint, which makes it look like his hands are wet.

Overall--3.5/5
Overall this is a nice little set where you can get two figures for the price of one. Granted, neither figure can do much, but they are still decent, non-primary characters to add to your collection.
