Saga 2003 #07 Anakin Skywalker (Secret Ceremony) Review

As we all know, Hasbro has sub-titles for most of their basic figures (such as "Geonosian Rescue" or in this case, "Secret Ceremony") and for the most part, they do a good job of labeling them correctly. However, this figure is perhaps the worst sub-title that I have seen. "Secret Ceremony" obviously refers to the secret wedding of Anakin and Padme, but the figure itself is so inappropriate for recreating such a scene that using the sub-title was a big mistake in my opinion. This figure is made for action scenes, not for wedding ceremonies. It seems the only reason they used "Secret Ceremony" is because Anakin is sporting his robotic right arm. Read on for the review and 10 photos!

Anakin Skywalker

Secret Ceremony

"In defiance of the rules and traditions decreed by the Jedi code, Anakin follows the yearnings of his heart to pursue his own destiny, while hiding his fateful decision from the eyes and knowledge of others." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt--4/5
Finally, an Anakin figure I can look at without laughing. Okay, so there are other decent Anakin figures, but this one ranks pretty high among them. This headsculpt of Anakin isn't as ugly as some other Anakin figures, but it still looks a bit weird to me. The hair looks a bit too puffy to me; he's got quite a 'fro going on. Anakin's outfit has the usual details and it is wrinkled just enough to make it look nice and realistic. The sleeves in the forearm area seems a little too wrinkled, but it still looks good. Anakin's left hand is posed so that it looks like he is using the Force. Perfect for hypnotizing the Reek or other make-believe Force-play. Anakin also has his robotic right hand, which I think was a mistake to include since this figure fits in better in a Geonosian Arena battle scene. You can make him stand in a pretty neutral stance, but the sculpted cloak definitely doesn't fit in with a wedding scene. The cloak is sculpted as if caught in the wind or frozen in motion; they really went crazy with this thing. It is a bit bulky but it does stay on the figure quite well. I prefer the figure with the cloak off though. The figure itself can be posed in a neutral pose, or a wide-stance action pose thanks to the articulation...

Articulation--4.5/5
Anakin has 10 points of articulation: neck, ball-jointed shoulders, left and right bicep cut, waist, hips, and ball-jointed ankles. This is an excellent set of articulation points and allows the figure to be posed in numerous ways. The ball-jointed shoulders are excellent, of course. Combined with the bicep-cuts, you can create some wicked lightsaber poses. Then there's the most interesting points in the set--the ball-jointed ankles. At first, I was really put off by how ugly they looked, and since there was no knee articulation, I thought they'd be pretty useless. Well, I'm happy to say that I was wrong--the ankles rock! They allow you to widen Anakin's stance for some really dynamic action poses. They're also good if you want to make it look like he's jumping into the air with his Force powers. This figure has great articulation for both neutral and action poses.

Features--NA
Anakin has no features, just the way I like it. I do however, get the sneaking suspicion that they were going to put a magnet in his left hand.

Accessories--3/5
You get Anakin's lightsaber, removable cloak, and a blast deflection effect. The lightsaber is an oddity. It doesn't have a removable blade and its sculpt is based on the metal lightsaber hilt! Doesn't really make any sense since we've got a few good non-removable-blade lightsaber sculpts. I guess this is just another "Hasbro moment". We finally also get Anakin's cloak, it's just too bad it doesn't quite fit in with a "Secret Ceremony". However, it is excellent for action scenes which is what this figure is good at. The blast deflection effect is pretty basic. I think I've seen it before but I've lost track of all the different blast effects. It clips onto the lightsaber rather tightly.

Paint--2/5
The paint on my fig isn't the greatest. The left hand looks especially terrible with flesh colored paint bleeding onto the sleeve. The little silver and gold cylinders on Anakin's belt are also a bit sloppy as is Anakin's mechanical hand.

Overall--4/5
This is simply a great figure. You can make great action poses with this guy and would be perfect for an arena diorama if it weren't for his mechanical hand. For a wedding scene, this figure is terrible if you use the overly posed cloak. In my eyes, this figure should not have the sub-title of "Secret Ceremony" attached to it; what's going to happen when people want an Anakin with a cloak that isn't flapping all about? Hasbro should have made this an "Arena Battle" Anakin or a "Droid Factory" Anakin and save the robotic hand for another Anakin figure.
