| Basic Figures 2003
| Saga
If you have the Attack of the Clones DVD or have seen the deleted scenes from the movie, then you've most likely seen these two. I'm surprised Hasbro decided to release these figures, knowing that the scene they were in was deleted from the movie proper. From my own perspective, it seems it was a wise choice; I've only seen these figures twice at my local toy stores and they don't hang around for long. But whether that's because fans have been starved for new product or because they really like these robots is unknown to me. Read on for the review and 14 photos!
UPDATE: Thanks to a reader known only as "AMD", I have learned that at least one of the droids appears in the actual movie! Three droids that look very similar to SP-4 can be spotted in the Coruscant docking bay scene where Anakin and Padme leave for Naboo. SP-4 & JN-66
Research Droids
"The analysis droids SP-4 and JN-66 assist Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi when he seeds their help in identifying a small toxic dart. The origin of the mysterious weapon may provide the only clue in discovering who is behind the assassination attempt on Senator Amidala. Deep within the great Jedi Temple, in an encased analysis room, the SP-4 droid examines the dart and searches for a possible link in its streaming bank of data. Typically reliable for such research, the analysis droid's assessment is less informative than the Jedi had hoped." --Excerpt from the package back
| Sculpt--4.5/5 The sculpting is good on these two. I just re-watched the deleted scene and they look very much like their movie counterparts. At first glance it may seem these two share the same body, but upon closer inspection you will find that both figures are almost totally unique. They only share the same bicep sections. I like the detail in the heads of these robots, especially the underside of their heads. They sculpted all the little wires that connect to the robots' "eyes" and there are plenty of other details to be impressed with. Their bodies also have good detail with lots of little bolts here and there. Excellent job on the sculpting! Articulation--4/5 Both SP-4 and JN-66 have eight points of articulation: ball-jointed upper-neck, hinged lower-neck, shoulders, elbows, and hips. The neck joints allow for some nice posing--you can make them look like they're examining poison darts or some other object. The elbow joints are also extremely useful for this as well. Features--NA/5 There are no action features associated with these figures. Accessories--2/5 You get a "hover column" for JN-66 and that's it. The clear, plastic hover column serves its purpose well and allows JN-66 to stand, er, I mean hover. It would have been nice if they came with a Kamino Saberdart or something to analyze since they are analysis droids. A small computer terminal or monitor would have been cool too, but seeing as how we are getting two figures for the price of one makes it hard to complain. Paint--2.5/5 The paint isn't bad, but these figures look very plastic-y when they should look more metallic. The prototypes look nicely painted in silver, but the final product is not. Instead they are just molded in a light gray plastic and they don't look metallic at all. On the plus side, I like the way they painted SP-4's "eyes" in gloss black, making the lenses look nice and shiny. Unfortunately, JN-66 didn't get the same treatment, so his eyes are dull and matte dark gray. Overall--4/5 These guys are well done figures. They aren't quite as nice and shiny as they are in their deleted scene, but they are sculpted well and have great articulation. They look like Short Circuit rejects to me and I can't help but think of Johnny-5 when I look at them. I'm not really into these guys since they didn't appear in the actual movie, but if you like robots or need some background droids for a diorama then these should do well. UPDATE: Okay, so SP-4 is kinda in the actual movie, so I guess that makes them okay in my book hehe. BUT, the SP-4 lookalikes look very short when compared to humans in the same scene , whereas the SP-4 figure is almost as tall most human figures! Are they really the same robots or did Hasbro goof up on the scale of these figures? Who knows... |
