Saga 2002 #17 Clone Trooper (with Firing Tripod Cannon!) Review

Hasbro gives us a clone trooper captain with added articulation and a nice tripod cannon accessory. Read on for the review and 7 photos!

Clone Trooper

"Trained specifically for military combat, Clone Troopers are virtually indistinguishable from one another. Part of a cloning army, they are grown in the cloning facilities of Tipoca City, a luminescent city of industry emerging from the raging seas of Kamino." --Excerpt from the card back

Sculpt--4/5
The details of this Clone Trooper are pretty much the same as the preview version's, which is a good thing. It also improves on the mold by having a more detailed belt, which is now a separate piece instead of molded along with the torso and chest like the preview figure. Certain edges and lines seem to be crisper and more defined on this version, making it look nice and clean. Interestingly, this Clone Trooper's pose is almost exactly the same as the preview version's and I wouldn't be surprised if the preview version was an early incarnation of this figure. One thing I don't like about the sculpt is the figure's left ankle pose. His foot is pointing forward a bit too much for my tastes, making it hard to find other poses for this guy.

Articulation--4/5
The Clone Trooper has twelve points of articulation: neck, shoulders, bicep-cuts on both arms, wrists, waist, hips, and knees. While not quite as good as the Commtech Stormtrooper, it's still a nice set of articulation points. The knees can also swivel, which is a nice touch. What would really make the knee articulation great, would be to have ankle articulation. Toy Biz learned this when they started putting knee articulation into their figures, so I hope Hasbro will figure it out eventually as well. It would have also been nice to see ball-jointed shoulders or a ball-jointed neck, but oh well.

Accessories--5/5
One of the things I love about the new Saga line is that we're seeing some really cool accessories being included with figures. With the Clone Trooper, you get his blaster rifle, a firing tripod cannon, and a little foot stand in the shape of a rock. This pack out could have made this a deluxe figure in the older lines, but is becoming the norm for some figures in the Saga line. The rifle is the same as the preview Clone Trooper's but has an extra paint op of silver splattered all over it. The cannon is nice and moderately detailed. It looks like a predecessor to the E-Web Blaster seen in Empire Strikes Back. The foot stand is the weakest accessory. I don't know why Hasbro made it at an angle, as it's very hard to get the Clone trooper to stand at all when using it. There is an indentation on the rock for his left foot, but the back of the card shows him using his right foot with it in a running pose. It's kind of funny because he wouldn't stand in such a pose especially with the way they are using the stand.

Paint--3.5/5
The paint is not perfect; the edges of the red lines going down the side of his arms are a bit messy in some parts. They also didn't paint the details of the little control box on his back even though they did for the preview version. They did however, paint the two small lines on the chest plate this time around and the helmet is painted better.

Overall--4/5
This figure is a great value with excellent articulation and accessories. He's one of the better figures in these initial waves of Episode II figures and should not be missed.
