ROTS Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter Review

ROTS Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter Part of the medium-sized vehicle wave, Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter is making its way to some stores ahead of schedule. Much like Anakin's Jedi Starfighter, Obi-Wan's has the flip-out wing panels, firing missiles, and great detail. It's a great vehicle that will no doubt be loved by kids and collector's alike. Read on for the review and 30 photos!

Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter

"Obi-Wan Kenobi battles deadly droid fighters while on a mission to rescue Chancellor Palpatine, who has been kidnapped by Separatist forces. As he heads for the vessel on which the chancellor is being held, buzz droids attach themselves to his starfighter to destroy it." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt--4.5/5
If you've read my review for Anakin's Jedi Starfighter, then you know how much I love the new Jedi Starfighter toy. Obi-Wan's starfighter is 99.9% the exact same thing sculpt-wise. Same details, same great cockpit, same rubbery guns, same everything...almost. The headrest in the cockpit is the only thing that is unique. It's slightly different, resembling a bowtie in shape as opposed to Anakin's oval-ish headrest. Other than that, everything's the same, which definitely isn't a bad thing to me.

Features--4/5
Like the sculpt, the features of Anakin's starfighter are repeated here. Obi-Wan's Starfighter has flip-open wings, retractable landing gear, firing missiles, opening canopy, and droid socket. The droid socket is pretty lousy and trying to fit an actual astromech figure in it will result in frustration and a droid that sticks way too far out of the socket. I don't blame Hasbro for this though, as it's Lucas' design team that didn't design the ship with enough room for a full sized astromech. Unfortunately, Lucas can rely on CG to make it look like one can fit, but Hasbro does not have that luxury. It has been speculated that the droid's feet are supposed to dangle from the bottom of the ship, but whether that's true or not is yet to be seen; I have seen stills from the movie that back up both viewpoints so it's a bit hard to say what the truth is.

The opening canopy allows access to the roomy cockpit. A missile in each wing can be fired by the push of a button at the back of the wing for projectile-firing-fun. The retractable landing gear is not that great. They simply swing down from under the front of the ship, but they do not lock very well and it's very easy for the ship to collapse under its own weight. The landing gear is also pretty obvious when retracted as the landing skids poke out from under the ship. The landing gear is definitely one of the low points of this toy.

However, the high point of this toy is the fabulous flip-out wings. By pressing a lever between the engines, the four wing panels flip outward, helping make the ship look even closer to a TIE fighter. The feature works well and consistently--this is a well-built toy! Got a Droid Tri-Fighter? If so, you can attach the Buzz Droids to the exposed wings of the Jedi Starfighter via holes. A nice little added play value!

Accessories--3/5
You get two missiles and R4-P17. Granted, R4-P17 isn't a full figure; you just get the top part of it which snaps into the droid socket. The head of R4 is well detailed and can rotate. R4's body on the other hand, lacks any detail but the included stickers do a decent job of making R4 presentable.

Paint--3.5/5
The paint job is perhaps the best reason to own Obi-Wan's Starfighter if you already own Anakin's or if you just prefer his over Anakin's. Obi-Wan's ship is a slightly lighter gray than Anakin's, and has burgundy accents on as opposed to Anakin's flair for yellow. Obi-Wan's wings have a slightly more complex paint job with some even lighter gray stripes and small black accents. Like Anakin's starfighter, Obi-Wan's has the same type of black, smeary-looking weathering job across the wings of the ship. And like Anakin's, the bottom of the ship has no weathering whatsoever, making it look unnaturally clean. Stickers are included to help weather the ship to your liking. This is a pretty good idea and I hope they continue it with future ships. The only problem I have with this is that sometimes the color of the sticker doesn't quite match the color of the ship's plastic or paint. In this case, the gray stickers don't match the color of the gray plastic the ship is made of.

Packaging--4.5/5
I'm really digging the ROTS packaging. I love the color palettes that Lucasfilm's marketing department chose, and I think that the orange Star Wars logo is a nice change of pace from the silver and gold iterations of the past. The box has no window but shows some nice photos of the product on sides of the box. The features of the toy are clearly listed on the back of the box, and the box feels sturdy.

Overall--4.5/5
At first I was a bit weary of buying another Jedi Starfighter, but after opening it up and having both fighters side by side I feel I made the right decision. I mean, if I could I'd probably buy five different versions of the X-wing even if their only difference was the paint job. Once the movie comes out, I'll probably like the ship even more, but even as it is, I love it. Good action features, decent paint, and a roomy cockpit. It would have been great if they could have included an Obi-Wan pilot figure, but I guess we'll just have to wait for the ROTS figure #56: Red Leader Obi-Wan.
