Agen Kolar

Jedi Master

"Jedi Council member Agen Kolar fought bravely at the Battle of Geonosis. Mace Windu considers him one of the Jedi Order's finest members and asks Agen to go with him on a mission to arrest Supreme Chancellor Palpatine for treason." --Excerpt from the package back

Sculpt—4/5
One of the first things you'll notice about Agen Kolar is his molded Jedi cloak. This one's special because it looks good AND is removable. The cloak is split into three sections: the main body and the two sleeves. The sleeves are cut open in the back which allows them to wrap around Agen's arms. Sculpt work on the cloak is very nice with realistic wrinkles and folds. The only drawback to the cloak is that it restricts the arm articulation, and moving the arms up into a horizontal position makes the long sleeves look like they are defying gravity.

Under the cloak Agen Kolar has got equally great sculpt-work with nice wrinkles in the sleeves of his robes and even in his pants--it's just too bad you won't see his pants too much thanks to his soft goods skirt. Going with soft goods was a good choice here, allowing for posability while maintaining the long skirt look true to the movie. Unfortunately, the skirt is a bit too tight and there isn't enough slack to create wide-stanced poses. There are pleats in the skirt to help it taper towards the belt, but in the end there simply isn't enough material to allow for some really dynamic poses.

Agen's headsculpt is particularly well done. It's got a good likeness to the actor and the detail work in his long hair is commendable. Unfortunately, without the outer cloak on, his hair hovers above his shoulders in an obvious way. Agen's proportions are decent, but at first I thought his arms looked to short. In reality, it's his legs that are too long, thus making the arms look shorter when they are actually the correct length.

Articulation--3.5/5
Agen Kolar has twelve points of articulation: swivel neck, ball-jointed shoulders, angle-cut elbows, wrists, waist, hips, and ball-jointed knees. This is a decent amount of points so why just an above average score? The biggest problem is the aforementioned cloth skirt. It simply restricts the movement of the legs too much, and I found it hard to create a truly exciting pose. On the other hand, the cloth skirt allows for good sitting poses and this figure fits well in the Jedi Starfighter or a Jedi Council chair. The arm articulation is adequate, but the cuts at the elbows aren't as well done as the ones on Ki-Adi-Mundi and thus don't allow for wide range of poses. For instance, it's impossible for Agen to hold his lightsaber with both hands since his arms can't bend enough at the elbows. A ball-jointed neck could have worked on this figure, especially with all the extra room between his hair and his shoulders when his cloak is off. Put on his cloak and he essentially becomes a one pose wonder, with little you can do to vary his pose without making his sleeves defy gravity.

Features--NA?/5
I guess you can say his removable cloak is a feature, and despite my gripes about it limiting articulation, I think it was a great experiment and was well executed on Hasbro's part. I think there is still a lot of potential with using cloth, but this has been the best sculpted cloak Hasbro has done yet.

Accessories--5/5
You get the removable cloak, lightsaber with removable blade, and a Coruscant/Invisible Hand display base. The cloak is great combining the functionality of a removable cloak with the detail of a sculpted cloak. The lightsaber is like SAGA lightsabers, having a removable blade. The hilt has a peg with can be inserted into a hole on Agen's belt; a nice feature for when Agen is sitting on the Jedi Council or in other non-combat situations. The display base is sculpted well and can connect to other Coruscant/Invisible Hand bases and also to the Mustafar/Polis Massa bases. However, I am slightly disappointed with this base since I was hoping I'd be able to form a hallway with multiple bases, but sadly this can't be done due to the way the floor of the base is made. No matter how you arrange them, there will always be gaps in the floor and the patterns won't quite match up.

Paint--3.5/5
Well done job on the paint. Agen's face looks good with well defined eyes and tattoos on his face. His belt is done well with silver accents, and his lightsaber hilt has a nice gold accent. His boots have a nice wash which helps make them look leathery.

Packaging--4/5
I'm really digging the ROTS packaging. I love the color palettes that Lucasfilm's marketing department chose, and I think that the orange Star Wars logo is a nice change of pace from the silver and gold iterations of the past. The shape of the cards also takes a dramatic step away from the rectangular cards we've gotten in the past. A large Vader helmet looms at the top of the card, looking down at the raging lava below. In the dome of Vader's helmet you can see an image of Obi-Wan and Anakin dueling it out and crossing lightsabers. The bubble covers most of the card and goes right up to the bottom edges of the card. The sides of the bubble are taped to the back of the card which makes it slightly hard to get the figure out of the package in a hurry, but MOC'ers will have nothing to worry about. After opening a couple of figures, I was beginning to miss the old packages that I could just tear into without having to worry about sticky tape. There's also a nice layered effect with the use of two cardboard inserts within the bubble featuring the Star Wars logo and a photo of the character. The cardbacks are likewise well designed with perhaps the best cardback layout design I've seen in years. There a nice photo of the character from the movie, a short description of the character, a photo of the actual toy, and nice cross-sell imagery to get you excited for the other toys in the line. Considering how much less space there is on these cards makes the design all the more successful.

Overall--3.5/5
Agen is a good, average Jedi figure. His outfit is your typical Jedi garb, making him a good base for custom Jedi figures. The use of cloth for his skirt was a good choice, but it doesn't have enough room for dynamic leg stances. The removable sculpted cloak is the star of this set, and you can potentially use it on other figures if you like its look. While the cloak limits the posability of the figure, it does look fantastic and if you're gonna have a sculpted cloak then this is the way it should be done from here on out. In the end, this is a good figure but some issues keep if from breaking out of being just above average.
