Rebel Trooper

Tantive IV Defender

"The Rebel Blockade Runner Tantive IV was on an urgent mission to Tatooine. Princess Leia Organa, armed with secret plans to the Death Star, was on her way to find General Obi-Wan Kenobi when the ship was attacked by an Imperial Star Destroyer. The heroic Rebel troopers were the last line of defense as the ship was boarded by Darth Vader and a platoon of stormtroopers." --Excerpt from the card back

Sculpt--3.5/5
Now this is a Rebel trooper! I had the old Power of the Force 2 Rebel Trooper and never opened it because that thing was so ugly I knew I would never display it with the rest of my loose collection. This Rebel trooper is a hundred times better in every way possible. No more gorilla chest. No more no-necked headsculpt. Yes, this trooper is great with a proportional body and an outfit that looks much more accurate from head to toe. The vest is much more detailed this time around and has a natural looking fit. The trooper's pants are well detailed and appropriately baggy. The baggy-ness also helps hide the knee articulation, but more on that later. There is a holster on the right leg but it is non-functional. The headsculpt is probably the thing I like least about the sculpt. It is very generic...a bit TOO generic for my tastes. I think maybe his eyes are too big, because they make him look a bit cartoony. The helmet is non-removeable but is nicely detailed. There are dents and scratch marks on the back of it, which is a nice touch. It's a good sculpt overall, but the pre-posed right arm makes it a bit difficult to find a more relaxed pose.

Articulation--4/5
The Rebel Trooper has eleven points of articulation: neck, shoulders, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. If you're familiar with 21st Century's Ultimate Soldier Xtreme Detail line of military action figures, then you know what to expect from the Rebel trooper's knee and ankle articulation. Basically, the knee is cut from the side at about a 45 degree angle. This lets the leg either be straight or, by twisting the lower leg, it magically looks like it's bent at a ninety-degree angle. Cooool. This allows you to put him in a crouching or standing pose, ready to aim at some Stormtroopers. However, I wish this figure had waist articulation, because I think it would help him stand and kneel better, balance-wise. Overall, good articulation for shooting poses if you've got or are planning a Tantive IV diorama, but not so good for relaxed or casual poses.

Accessories--3/5
You get one accessory: a blaster rifle. Despite only getting one accessory, the rifle is done extremely well, especially considering how small this thing is. So good job on the rifle...and I can't think of anything else they could have included so I've got no problems in this department.

Paint--3.5/5
The Rebel Trooper has been almost fully molded in the correctly colored plastic, thus not needing much to paint. However what is painted is painted nicely. The only thing I have issue with is the helmet. It is painted in a gloss white, which is nice, but the black section at the front has sloppy edges which detracts from the overall look of the figure. Other than that, the paint is good.

Overall--4/5
I was quite eager to get my hands on this figure because of the improvement it is over the older version, but couldn't help feeling a bit disappointed by it. Perhaps he's just not as exciting as I expected him to be, or maybe his headsculpt is just too boring for my tastes. In any case, this is a good figure with good poseability and makes a great army-building unit.
