POTJ Scout Trooper (Imperial Patrol) Review

Scout troopers are always a welcome addition to my collection, and Hasbro makes one worthy of replacing older versions. Unfortunately, this one can't ride a speeder bike, which is in my opinion, an essential trait that a scout trooper figure should have. Read on for the review and 4 photos!

Scout Trooper

Imperial Patrol

"Although lightly armored, Imperial scout troopers are essentially highly mobile stormtroopers. They patrol perimeters, perform reconnaissance missions, and scout enemy locations. They are equipped for high maneuverability and long periods without support." --Excerpt from the Force File

Sculpt--3.5/5
The old Power of the Force 2 Scout Trooper looked good riding on the speeder bike, but once he got off he looked like he was constipated. For that reason, I liked my vintage Scout Trooper a whole lot more. With this new Power of the Jedi Scout Trooper, Hasbro has finally given us a worthy replacement of the vintage figure. The sculpting is very accurate and every detail in the uniform has been reproduced well. My only gripe (and it's a very small gripe) is that the goggles could be a tad bigger and the small crescent below the goggles could be a tad smaller. However, that could just be a painting error. Pose-wise, this figure is a mixed bag. He looks somewhat relaxed yet attentive, as if his speederbike had just been stolen by an ewok and he was left standing around. His arms are the things I like least about this sculpt, his left arm especially. His left arm is bent at almost a ninety degree angle and his hand is posed as if it is supposed to hold something. The grip is too wide to hold his pistol and I don't remember them ever holding anything else in Return of the Jedi. The right arm is better posed than the left and is straighter. The right hand is posed to hold his pistol. What I don't like about this arm is that it is posed away from his waist as if he were a cowboy about to make a quick draw in a showdown. It works well when he is pointing his gun so it's not that bad.
Overall, this is a good sculpt, but the vintage figure might still be better if you have a diorama of the Emperor's arrival on the second Death Star.

Articulation--2/5
The Scout Trooper has six points: neck, shoulders, waist and hips. I'm a bit disappointed with this figure's articulation. I mean, there is a ton of potential for this figure to have more articulation points. The figure has many places where articulation could be easily hidden. This figure could have had bicep-cuts, wrist-cuts or elbow-cuts and they would have been very well hidden. This figure could have also had a ball-jointed neck like the commtech Stormtrooper. For me, the feature that would have made this figure perfect would have been the ability to ride the speederbike and also have a normal pose when off the speederbike.

Accessories--3/5
You get one accessory: a blaster pistol. The pistol fits into the ankle holster on the Scout Trooper's right leg or into his right hand. The gun is well sculpted and is a good representation of its movie counterpart.

Paint--3/5
The paint job on this Scout Trooper is a definite improvement over past versions with its accurately painted helmet and the brown soles on the boots. The dirty version (the one pictured here) has blotches of dirt in various spots of the uniform. I like the brown dirt on the boots, but I think they overdid the black spots on the rest of his body. They seem a little too dark and look more like he's been blasted or burned pretty badly. The spots on his abdomen are the worst offenders.

Overall--3.5/5
The Scout Trooper isn't the best army-building unit out there, but he looks cool and is well sculpted. It is a vast improvement over the POTF2 version, but is disappointing in its inability to ride the speederbike. He is still a worthy purchase if you see him and looks good standing with his Imperial brethren.
