EU (Expanded Universe) generally refers to anything that isn't from the movie, and this figure is definitely not from any movie. If you don't mind that though, and are a Maul fan, then you may find this to be a worthy figure to add to your collection. Read on for the review and 7 photos!
Darth Maul
with Sith Attack Droid
"Darth Maul, the evil Sith Lord, prepares for battle with the Jedi by dueling with lethal attack droids. Darth Maul's hatred of the Jedi fuels his desire to perfect his skill with his double-bladed lightsaber." --Excerpt from the card back
| Sculpt--4/5 At first I thought to myself, "oh boy, another pre-posed figure", but after opening this guy, I've really come to appreciate this sculpt. There's a lot of charisma in this sculpt from his headscupt to the way his clothes are being caught in the air. The headsculpt is what I like most about this Maul figure; it's so devilishly evil-looking that I wish I could replace the heads of every other Darth Maul I own with this one. Maul's body is sculpted very well too. His muscles are nicely defined and his hands are posed great as well. This is an excellent sculpt through and through. Articulation--4/5 Hasbro really came through with the articulation. Darth Maul has ten points: neck, shoulders, bicep-cuts, forearm-cuts, waist, and hips. The articulation on the arms help give this figure a pretty diverse range of action poses. For instance, you can make Maul posed as if he pointing at his enemy, or you can pose him so he can beckon his opponents with his finger. I've made quite a few cool-looking poses and I can't figure out which one I like best! Unfortunately, because of the way Maul's body is posed, the number of possible poses are limited. Despite this, I still think there's a good amount of different poses that can be achieved. One bad thing I found about this Darth Maul, and that's the left bicep joint. This joint is pretty loose making it pretty easy to pull off Darth Maul's arm. Accessories--2.5/5 The "Sith Attack Droid" is pretty lame. I would rather they just not include it at all--that's how lame it is. It basically just sits there, looking stupid. It has a little "blow up" feature, and even that doesn't work well. You press a tab on the base of the stand and it pops off. Whoopty-doo. I think if would have been cool if Hasbro had made it so you could damage the droid in a better way. Like if you could hit a certain part of the droid and part of it blows off. Or if you hit a certain panel, that panel flips to reveal a battle-damaged dent or slash-mark ala Battle Armor He-Man (if you're old enough to remember that particular He-man toy). This category would have gotten a 1/5 had it not been for the inclusion of Darth Maul's lightsaber. The handle is a little too thick for my tastes, and the blades could be a bit longer, but all in all it's a pretty good saber. It also splits in half just like in the movie. Paint--4/5 The paint on this figure is excellent. Maul's full-body tattoo looks great, and his face is painted well. His horns could be painted a little better, but they're so small I can see why it might be hard getting them to all look good. Overall--4/5 Darth Maul was one of the saving graces of Episode I, and this figure is a testament to why he is such a cool character. It perfectly captures Darth Maul's evil and rage, and it has become my favorite Darth Maul figure yet. |
