Sculpt--3/5 As of the writing of this review (May 9th, 2002), I can honestly say that this is the best Ep2 Anakin Skywalker figure. Unfortunately, that's not saying much. The only other Anakin is the Peasant Disguise version which isn't all that good. This Anakin is posed in an action pose, but it isn't as dynamic as some of the other Jedi figures. The detailing is sparce; there's really nothing to get excited about in this department. Something that kind of irritates me about this figure is that his arms are pretty straight making it a little hard to find an action pose that looks really cool.
The headsculpt hasn't improved much over Peasant Disguise Anakin's. This time around his head is a bit bigger (actually the whole figure is bigger than Peasant Disguise Anakin). Something about the hair still doesn't look quite right, but perhaps it's a painting problem.
Articulation--3/5 Anakin has ten points: neck, shoulders, bicep-cuts on both arms, wrists, waist, and hips. Although it sounds like a good list of points, I'm disappointed because most of them don't do much good. Since the arms are so straight, you don't really need the bicep-cuts since the wrist joints give you the same poses. Well, you DO need the right bicep-cut (more on that later), but the left bicep cut should have been cut at an angle so his arm could be bent when you twist it. Hasbro might have wanted to do that, but the action feature contained in the left arm probably got in the way of a more imaginative articulation point.
I would have loved to see ball jointed shoulders since this figure begs to be put in lots of action poses. It would have been really nice if you could recreate the pose Hayden is striking in the photo on the package.
Features--2/5 Anakin has "lightsaber-battling" action! It looks pretty cheesy though, as his wrist just twists back and forth or in circles. It doesn't really look like lightsaber battling of any sort. It also makes Anakin's wrist unattractive and boney. And let's not forget the big wheel sticking out of Anakin's back. I just don't think it was worth putting the feature in, as they've sacrificed the look of the figure for an unconvincing action feature.
Anakin also has a Force action right hand. It has a small magnet in it so you can Force-attract the green lightsaber to his hand. Like most other figures with this feature, it only works when you put his hand extremely close to the lightsaber.
Anakin's last feature is his removeable right arm. The arm is held in place by a magnet in the shoulder section and a metal slug in the forearm section. I wish they had put magnets in both sections (like Zam Wesell) because the attraction is pretty weak and the arm will fall off pretty easily.
Accessories--4/5 You get two lightsabers with Anakin which is very cool. However, only the green one has a metal hilt. The hilt looks a lot like Kit Fisto's but is slightly different. Anakin's lightsaber hilt looks a lot like the one given to Luke in A New Hope, but is slightly different. It actually looks like a combination of Luke's and Darth Vader's lightsaber hilt, which I guess makes sense, since Anakin makes both of them.
Paint--3/5 The paint is pretty good on my figure and since it was the only one, I couldn't compare it to others. The only thing I wasn't too impressed with was the painting on Anakin's lightsaber hilt. The grips just aren't painted well at all and are splotchy and crooked.
Overall--3/5 This figure could have been so much more. Correction--This figure SHOULD have been so much more. A poor action feature and uninspired poseability make this figure just average when it had the potential to be one of the best figures in the line.
