Sculpt--3.5/5 Clone Troopers. Collectors can't get enough of em. So it's a good thing Hasbro released the Clone Trooper Pilot, not only to satiate the outcry for more Clone Troopers but because of the somewhat recent release of the Republic Gunship. The Clone Trooper Pilot wears the same armor as a normal Clone Trooper, except for their specialized helmet which is reminiscent of an AT-AT driver helmet from The Empire Strikes Back. Connected to the helmet is a small box via hoses that come out from the back of the helmet. In terms of accuracy, the helmet isn't as good as it could be. The details on the side of the helmet aren't accurate at all and only vaguely resemble what it looks like in the movie. The "fin" on the helmet is also much too large in the back and protrudes out much more than it should. There should also be a slight indent going down the middle of the helmet top. My guess is that Hasbro based the sculpt on an earlier version of the Clone Pilot or just didn't have good reference images.
The pose of the Clone Pilot is another thing I have issue with. He is posed to be kind of leaning to his left which a bit puzzling to me. I guess Hasbro wanted to make him look a little more active when positioned behind his ball turret. I would have much rather liked to see some inventive articulation than this permanantly leaning pose.
Articulation--3.5/5 The Clone Pilot has eight articulation points: neck, shoulders, bicep-cuts, waist, and hips. The neck is actually "ball-jointed" in that it can turn side to side and look up and down. Other than that, the articulation is severely lacking and average. Wrist joints would have been great to hold his included rifle with both hands, and knee-joints are almost always a welcome addition. But sadly, those points are not included, making it hard to find poses for this guy when he's not behind his turret or in the cockpit. Then again, we'll all be using this guy to fill the pilot seats of the Republic Gunship so perhaps more articulation isn't absolutely necessary.
Features--3/5 The included turret features a shooting projectile. Put the projectile in the hole, push the projectile from the back, and out it flies. Works well, but nothing horribly special or imaginative.
Accessories--3.5/5 Included with the Clone Pilot is a standard blaster and the ball turret with projectile. The blaster is nice since we've only gotten the heavy blasters with the other Clone Troopers. The included turret is supposed to be the death ball turret thingies in the movie, but are obviously way out of proportion. This is due to the fact the Hasbro's Republic Gunship is not scaled accurately to the figures. The small gun turrets are a disappointment. Sure, full-scaled turrets would have been inaccurate to the scale of the toy Gunship, but at least the inaccuracy would be going towards accuracy instead of further away from it. As it is, the turrets can be connected to the Gunship and can be manned with the control sticks that come out of the back of the turret. The actual ball doesn't seem to rotate, but it can move up and down (or side to side when attached to the Gunship). The stand the ball is connected to is also hinged at the base for even more positioning options. The controls protrude from the top-back of the ball turret and can likewise be positioned in various ways. The turrets are alright I suppose, but I don't think I'll be using them.
Paint--4/5 I like the paint job on these guys. They have specks of dirt all over their armor and it looks good in my opinion. The helmet is painted well, but it isn't accurate. This is more because the sculpt is inaccurate so the painters can't be blamed; it really looks like they did their best to make it look like the real thing. The insignias on the helmet could be a tad bigger. Anyway, it's a pretty good paint job overall, it's just too bad it's on an inaccurate sculpt.
Overall--3.5/5 I'm disappointed with the inaccuracies of the helmet, but it's still a decent and somewhat cool-looking figure. The posing leaves a little to be desired, but as long as he can fit in the Republic Gunship cockpit I won't be complaining too much. A must-have figure if you own a Gunship, but unfortunate that Hasbro gave us a reason to warrant a resculpt.
