| Sculpt--3.5/5 Have you ever played with little green army men when you were little? If so, you'll remember how they all had these cool shooting poses, and that what made them great was that you can have a huge army of them sprawled across your floor. Well, this Clone Trooper Army 3-pack is kind of the modern, Star Wars version of little green plastic army men. Each Clone Trooper has their own unique pose; one is standing and blasting his huge rifle, the second is kneeling and ready to take a shot, the third is in a prone position and aims his blaster for the kill. The sculpting on these three is pretty much the same as all the other clone troopers; a bit on the scrawny-looking side but good enough to represent their movie counterparts. The figures are also very preposed; you can't even remove the gun from their hands because their guns and hands are all one piece! It's a bit odd, but I'm guessing they did that to cut down on the cost to make these. At any rate, they still look very cool; the poses Hasbro has chosen are great! Articulation--2.5/5 This is another point where Hasbro has implemented some cost cutting techiniques. None of the Clone Troopers have hip articulation! The standing Clone Trooper has six points: ball-jointed neck, shoulders, left wrist, mid-section, and waist. I really wish this figure had the hip articulation just so we could make adjustments to his stance. As it is, I can't get this guy to stand at all! It could just be my figure, but because the plastic Hasbro has used is quite soft, I can forsee that many of these figures will have difficulty standing. The kneeling Clone Trooper also has six articulation points: ball-jointed neck, shoulders, right wrist, mid-section, and waist. You might be asking, "What's up with this 'mid-section' and 'waist' articulation??" Well, the upper-body section of the armor is a seperate piece from the belt and mid-section armor. This allows you to twist the Clone Trooper's body just above the stomach, and at the traditional spot at the belt line. The prone Clone Trooper has only five points of articulation: ball-jointed neck, shoulders, right wrist, and mid-section. All three Clone Troopers feature a true ball-jointed neck. That is to say, their neck joints are actually ball-and-socket type joints instead of the pseudo ball-joints we usually get (hinge-and-twist type joints). The range in neck motion is pretty good, but you may have to partially pop their head off to achieve certain poses. At first I was disappointed in the lack of articulation, and no doubt you might be too, but you have to realize that you're getting three figures for about ten or eleven bucks! That isn't half bad, and these figures are posed well enough that extra articulation isn't that necessary. Features--NA/5 No features here. This is an army building pack, pure and simple. Accessories--NA/5 At first I figured that there's three accessories: the three blasters, but in actuality there are none! As mentioned earlier, the guns are molded into the hands of each trooper and are non-removable. Another cost-cutting technique. Personally, I don't mind this decision; you can't lose these weapons! Paint--2/5 Okay, it's safe to say that Hasbro has cut costs in every category there is; paint is no exception. There is only one paint color here and you guessed it, it's black. If it's not supposed to be black, then it's not painted at all. So that means there's no grey accents on the helmet and armor and no weathering or gloss either. These guys still look good though, so it isn't that bad. There are some paint flubs here and there like bleeding and some sections aren't fully painted, but what can I say? I'm used to it. Update: I'm sure all of you know by now that there are paint variations to this set. There are red, yellow, blue, and green-striped Clone Troopers now showing up. Overall--3/5 These figures by themselves aren't that great, but because they're army building units and because they're Clone Troopers, I don't think anyone's gonna argue. I sure ain't! I think it's still a pretty good value despite the cost-cutting techniques; three Clone Troopers for $10.99? I'll take that! I only wish I picked up a second set before the scalpers got the rest of them (two guys were right on my heels!). I must also applaud Hasbro for bringing this type of product out. They know we've been clammoring for more regular Clone Troopers and this set will satisfy many, many people. Here's to hoping Hasbro can meet the demand! |
