AOTC Sneak Preview Clone Trooper Review

With Episode II on the horizon, Hasbro gives us a sneak peek at the characters from the movie with four figures: the clone trooper, Jango Fett, R3-T7, and Zam Wesell. The clone trooper features blaster rifle with blast-effect. Read on for the review and 6 photos!

Clone Trooper

"Ten years after the fight to save Naboo from invasion, the galaxy is on the brink of civil war. Under the leadership of a renegade Jedi, thousands of solar systems threaten to secede from the Galactic Republic.
"A courageous Jedi Knight, his impulsive and headstrong apprentice, and a queen-turned-senator are drawn into the heart of the conflict..and the beginning of war." --Excerpt from the card back

Sculpt--3.5/5
Ah, the Clone Trooper--the predecessor to the classic Stormtroopers. Well, the Clone Trooper armor design has been growing on me, and this figure is why. Looking at this figure, you can see how the designers are starting to add in elements from the original trilogy. Anyway, this figure's sculpting is great; all his armor seems to be pretty accurate to photos I've seen. At first, I thought this guy's pose was pretty dorky looking...well, it does look pretty dorky on the back of the package, but out of the package, the pose looks great. A great sculpt, but limited to one pose.

Articulation--2/5
Oy! The Clone Trooper has five points: neck, shoulders and hips. Wow...five points. I'm shocked. I'm speechless. This figure doesn't deserve only five points! Just adding waist articulation would have helped this figure's posing greatly. There's also a ton of places where arm articulation could be easily and well hidden. I don't know what Hasbro's thinking here: they give Zam Wesell eight points, but give Jango six and the Clone Trooper five?!

Accessories--3/5
The Clone Trooper comes with a blaster rifle and the almost requisite blast-affect attachment. The rifle is sculpted well, and attentive Star Wars fans will notice something very familiar about it--it's made up of Stormtrooper guns! The back half of the gun is pretty much the back end of a German MG34, a WWII machine gun used in Star Wars: A New Hope as a heavy blaster rifle. The front end of the Clone Trooper gun is an enlarged Standard Imperial Issue blaster rifle, turned upside-down with the handle removed. Interesting.
The blast-effect attachment is a lot cooler than I thought it would be, but it adds additional weight to the gun, causing the figure to be mis-balanced. Thus, you have to adjust his hips or he'll fall over very easily.

Paint--3.5/5
The paint is pretty good on my figure and the dirt effect is pretty convincing. Some of the black parts could be painted a bit better though, as it doesn't cover everything it should in some parts.

Overall--3/5
I like this figure because I think the Clone Troopers look cool, but overall, this one could have been so much better. Granted, it appears Hasbro is saving the really good figures for the "real" Episode II line, but I don't think that's an excuse to give us figures that aren't as good as they could've been.
