Hasbro's Arvel Crynyd: Mistaken Identity?

Arvel Crynyd is the A-wing pilot who eventually crashes into the Executor's unshielded bridge, bringing the Super Star Destroyer to a fantastic end. Both Hasbro and www.Starwars.com (and many other online sources) seem to agree with this. But there lies the problem--upon watching the movie, it is easily discernable that the A-wing pilot that does this remarkable feat looks nothing like the Arvel Crynyd figure that Hasbro has churned out in their Rebel Pilots Cinema Scene.

Hasbro's Arvel Crynyd
"A-Wing Pilot"

In fact, Hasbro's Arvel Crynyd seems to be a total error in practically every way possible. First of all, Hasbro's Arvel Crynyd (HAC from here on) is dressed in Y-wing pilot attire (circa Battle of Endor). But even that is an error in itself! Y-wing pilots dressed in a grey jumpsuit, not red, which HAC is dressed in. And even if he truly was supposed to be an A-wing pilot, he should be dressed in a green jumpsuit.

Second, if this isn't Arvel Crynyd, then obviously it is supposed to be the Asian Y-wing pilot seen in ROTJ, who has the single line, "There's too many of them!" It was quite hard tracking down the name of this guy, but I eventually found it; his name is Lt. Telsij (Grey Two). I am unsure of the actual actor's name however. This information comes from the Star Wars Customizable Card Game. It should be noted that he is not to be confused with Y-wing pilot, J'ef Hsu (Grey Four). Hsu is the pilot who screams out, "I'm hiiiiiiiit!!" as his Y-wing crashes into a star destroyer. Hsu is actually played by a Caucasian with brown hair. All you really have to look at is the helmets though; Hsu has the "bat-like" symbol on his chin, while Telsij doesn't.

This brings us to another error within an error. If HAC is indeed supposed to be Lt. Telsij, then the helmet decals are incorrect. Telsij's helmet has yellow and black diagonal stripes on the forehead area; HAC's does not. The helmet that comes with HAC does indeed exist, however, and can be seen in the briefing room being held by a Y-wing pilot according to one internet webpage. The helmet can also be seen in a trailer for the video game, Rebel Assault II, which used actual props from the movies. Strangely enough, the helmet is being worn by a B-wing pilot. I don't own the full game so I can't say if it shows up there.

One final error is in the mold of the helmet itself. The footage of Lt. Telsij In ROTJ was flipped making it seem like the Y-wing helmet is symmetrical when in reality it is not. The small oval-ish recess in the jaw/cheek-area of the helmet only exists on one side of the helmet, not both sides as the toy has it.

In conclusion, I would have to say that Hasbro goofed up on this figure big time. Not only did they give him the wrong name, but they also painted his uniform wrong and gave him the wrong helmet. I still love this figure because of it's uniqueness, but hope they make a more accurate Y-wing pilot the next time around.
